Middlemarch is doing something no other novel does — it makes you feel the weight of a whole society, and then makes you love the individuals crushed inside it anyway.

On Gilead

A novel that reads like a long exhale. Robinson finds the sacred in ordinary mornings — light through a window, a son playing in the yard. Quietly floored me.
